Oral Sedation
Oral Sedation is an affordable sedation option in most dental practices. It simply involves ingesting a pill orally. There are a variety of dosage protocols that can be used to medicate the patient as early as the day prior to treatment. This method can help to reduce memory of the procedure, and sensory information that could be used for memory recall of the experience. When sedated, an anxious patient will experience a much more pleasant and timely treatment.

Method

Oral sedation is usually accomplished with the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. These drugs not only act as a sedative, but they also possess a degree of amnesic effects. This helps in removing any unpleasant experience from the patient’s memory. However, they do not have any pain relieving properties. This is why some form of local anesthetic is also usually employed.

It also offers a great alternative for patients with anxiety that also suffer from a fear of needles. It is easy to administer, functions well and is considered a low cost sedation. The process is extremely safe for the patient and can be easily monitored by the dentist.

Disadvantages

With the benefits known, there are some disadvantages to consider:

  • Patients require a driver to bring them to and from their appointment
  • Oral sedation offers no analgesic properties
  • Sedation levels are not easily changed
  • None of the disadvantages of oral sedation are severe, but should be known prior to deciding on a sedation method.
