Method
Oral sedation is usually accomplished with the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. These drugs not only act as a sedative, but they also possess a degree of amnesic effects. This helps in removing any unpleasant experience from the patient’s memory. However, they do not have any pain relieving properties. This is why some form of local anesthetic is also usually employed.
Disadvantages
With the benefits known, there are some disadvantages to consider:
- Patients require a driver to bring them to and from their appointment
- Oral sedation offers no analgesic properties
- Sedation levels are not easily changed
- None of the disadvantages of oral sedation are severe, but should be known prior to deciding on a sedation method.
