Dental Implants
Dental Implants are artificial, tooth and root replacements used in prosthetic dentistry. Their purpose is to help support dental restorations, and improve oral health. They are fixtures (posts), typically titanium, placed in the jaw bone to replace the root of a missing tooth. They can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or as a mean to support and secure complete or partial dentures.

The dental clinicians at Dr. Gregg Ueckert’s office are well known for their ability and knowledge in dealing with dental implants. They understand that dental implants can be done in a variety of different ways, and seeks to match the correct technique with the individual patient’s needs.

Dental Implants: Advantages

Dental implants have definite advantages over conventional tooth replacement options. The implant serves to replace an individual tooth or teeth, without compromising the health of surrounding teeth. Implants blend to appear and function, the same as your natural teeth. Implants can also help to preserve bone structure by replacing some of the tooth root.  By integrating with your jawbone, dental implants ensure healthy bone is kept intact.  When looking for long term solutions, dental implants can maintain their aesthetic, functionality and comfortability for many years.
A tooth-supported fixed bridge is another common treatment when addressing tooth loss. This treatment demands that adjacent teeth be used to support the bridge, which can often create other oral health issues.  These problems can include:
  • Visible defect of gums and bone due to recession around bridge or denture.
  • Resorbed bone causing a collapsed smile.
  • Bacteria development and tooth decay
  • Shifting of removable partial dentures can reduce ability to eat certain foods.

Dental implants have the look and feel of natural teeth. They not only enhance your appearance, they also give you greater confidence. You can eat what you like, speak more easily and clearly, and be free of potential embarrassment.  By following a regular routine of oral hygiene and checkups, dental implants can provide a long term solution to improve dental health.

Osseo-Integrated Implantation

Osseo-integration is the considered the best option to properly support the dental implant. There are many shapes, surface textures and size of dental implants, and the osseo-integration process allows them tight contact to the jaw bone. When this is accomplished by an experienced clinician, 90% of resulting implants will last for 10 or more years.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants placed directly into the jaw bone are used by Dr. Ueckert in the osseo-integration process. Titanium is fused into the bone leaving pores which osteoblasts and connective tissue can migrate. Osteoblasts are bone building cells, and as growth occurs they integrate into the rugged surface of the implanted titanium creating direct contact between the bone and implant.

The result is bone growth to the surface of the implant without the interference of scar tissue. These osseo-integrated, endosteal dental implants are widely accepted as the most successful variety. Endosteal implants have been called the single most important advance in restorative dentistry since the advent of the high speed drill.

Ridge Preservation

Once the tooth extraction is done, ridge preservation becomes very important. The ridge preservation procedure fills the empty tooth socket, helping the bone to maintain size and strength, to support future implant placement. Without it, patients will experience bone loss at levels of up to fifty percent within the first six months. The process should be done as close to the extraction as possible to maintain maximum bone height and width. Ridge preservation keeps bones strong and provides a foundation for successful dental implantation.
